Revolutionizing the world of gastronomy through automated catering solutions

Building Catering 5.0 with DaVinci Kitchen

Science fiction has been promising food prepared by robots for decades, but it has taken longer than expected for the technology to catch up to the dream. There will always be a place for talented chefs to add their art to the science of gastronomy, but there is increasing interest in technology that will help put high quality food on our plates consistently and safely. In the age of COVID 19, suddenly the idea of food that is prepared without intervention from human hands has very tangible appeal.

Leipzig-based Davinci Kitchen started to develop and standardize a custom-fit and automatized catering solution in January 2019. They have one goal: to completely revolutionize the world of cooking & gastronomy by creating a fully robotic kitchen, offering a custom-fit and automated catering solutions for businesses who aim for perfection in the quality of their food and service. To do so, they were in need of an efficient hardware solution with a pragmatic design that would not only be powerful enough to drive the machines behind their robotic kitchen, but that would also fit perfectly into the limited space they had available for their custom kitchen products. With so much room to expand the capabilities of their robotic kitchens, the team at DaVinci Kitchen also needed a computing platform that could grow with them.

"Having our robot chef powered by OnLogic gives us flexibility regarding upcoming computing-solutions plus great personalized support"

The OnLogic Solution - The MK100B-54 Industrial Rackmount

The design of the MK100B-54 high performance mini server was the perfect solution for DaVinci Kitchen’s challenge. The rackmount chassis allowed for installation under Davinci Kitchen's integrated dishwashing machine, which was the only place left for electronics in this complex automated kitchen solution. Combined with the power of Intel’s Coffee Lake Core i5 processor and 16 GB of DDR4 memory, this solution would be the fundamental driver of the robotic arm running and executing the code to prepare all the dishes.

"Our robot is working great so far. With the help of OnLogic we are currently working on upgrading the speed in order to make the movements of the Robotic Arm more efficient. We definitely can see future partnering with OnLogic."

What's Next for DaVinci Kitchen?

DaVinci Kitchen is currently focused on catering solutions for businesses who want to raise their standard in food quality and services, or offer a unique dining experience to their guests. But the future may hold much more, with a vision of potential DaVinci Kitchen restaurants on the minds of the company's founders.

“The robotic-arm helps to solve problems of the catering industry, such as rising worker-costs as well as a lack of available workforce. With a current landscape of social distancing, DaVinci Kitchen would make an excellent solution since there is no direct contact during the cooking process. The food can be ordered via phone and the only staff needed is to refill the ingredient stations before or after client hours”
