Project Needs

An Energy-Efficient, Reliable Computer

ADUSA approached OnLogic with a need for an energy-efficient computer that could run for extended periods of time without issue. Some of the devices the computer would need to run were portable, so minimum power-draw was key.


They needed to run self-order kiosks for fresh food ordering; ticket dispensers for customer-facing queue management; order/queue managers for store associates; and customer-facing “Q-Viewers” and digital menu boards. They also wanted to establish a common thin-client architecture, based on a single computing platform and lightweight Windows OS, for all the devices that comprise the in-store segment of their Omni-Channel strategy.


The uses varied, but the basic necessities remained constant: The computer had to be compact, for portable and slim-kiosk deployment; reliable and long-lasting to minimize ownership costs; flexible, so it could run multiple independent tasks, from standing kiosks to behind-the-counter LCD displays; and discreet, since aesthetics are key in customer-machine interface, and a clunky computer would detract from the overall experience.


Since all of ADUSA’s devices needed to sync up at a central hub to ensure fluidity in all aspects of the ordering process, dependable remote connectivity was a must. Finally, to make customer-system interaction as seamless and aesthetically pleasing as possible, these systems—though preferably small and with little energy-draw—needed to provide a decent amount of processing capability for graphic displays.


The OnLogic Solution

The NUC-based LGX AG960 Kiosk Computer

“ADUSA brought me a long description of what their dream system would look like,” says Amy Laverack, OnLogic’s Digital Signage Sales Engineer, “and I knew almost immediately they could use our NUC-based system.”

Laverack worked with OnLogic’s lead engineer, Rodney Hill, to nuance the OnLogic AG960 toward ADUSA’s requisites. “It was pretty simple to create ADUSA’s ideal system,” says Hill. “We created this system with this type of customer in mind, so we pretty much already had exactly what they needed--as is the case with a lot of kiosk and point-of-use customers looking for a small, flexible system.”


The AG960 offered ADUSA an Intel Core i Ivy Bridge ULV CPU in the revolutionary, ultra-compact (~4” x 4”) NUC form factor. The AG960 is constructed entirely of rust-protected, plated steel; it has four USB 2.0 ports, two HDMI ports, and a frontpanel LED power button. Unlike comparable light industrial NUC chassis, the AG960 is optimized for mSATA and CPU cooling to ensure against heat-related mechanical issues. But, in the event of an issue, the AG960 is also easily changed out, minimizing downtime in the bustling supermarket environment.
