What is a Vibration Proof Computer?

Computers are now being installed in a variety of environments, some of which are a far cry from the stationary, vibration-free office desk. In automotive or rugged installations where there is a lot of movement, the internal components of a standard computer, such as hard drives and fans, would quickly cause system failures.

In these situations, modern industrial computers feature vibration resistant components and connections, often without any internal cabling, to minimize failure points and ensure reliable operation. Some industrial PCs are compatible with vibration isolation kits, which offer a buffer between the hardware and its constantly moving mounting platform.

Where Would You Need a Vibration Proof Computer?

A swift blow or a prolonged shake can cripple a computer system. In trains, boats, cars and other vehicles, the constant motion, bumps and blows of potholes, waves or bad tracks can devastate a system. On a manufacturing line, the vibration of industrial machines can lead to loose connections and eventually vibrate a PC to death. In a mine, blasting and drilling can create a brutal combination of sudden shock and continual vibration. Regardless of the source of vibration and shock, it’s important to understand that standard computer hardware simply isn’t designed to withstand challenging environments. From the motherboard, to onboard components like memory, to the enclosure, vibration-proofing a computer involves understanding the most common failure points and eliminating or isolating them.
