An Energy-Efficient, Reliable Computer
With patients’ health on the line, quality and reliability are of the utmost importance. JACO required computers for their UltraLite Workstation on Wheels series as well as their wall-mounted workstations that healthcare providers could rely on to function well throughout the care-giving process. Mobile computer carts run on batteries, so energy-efficiency is imperative for reliable care throughout the day. Not only that, but these computers had to be easily cleanable and optimized for infection control to ensure adherence to hospitals’ strict sanitation codes.
The OnLogic Solution

“JACO approached us with a pretty clear idea of what they needed,” says Cole Downing, OnLogic’s Medical Sales Engineer. “They were looking for a quiet, low-profile, super energy-efficient and versatile computer, solidly constructed and easy to assemble.” They also needed components with a long life, and high-speed processors capable of handling a diverse multimedia interface.
But the medical industry comes with another set of challenges: “With this type of computer,” says Rodney Hill, OnLogic’s Lead Engineer, “you want to eliminate any points of contamination, or ‘bio-entrapment,’ where bacteria could get in and grow”so you don’t want a lot of holes and creases that make it difficult to clean.”
Downing worked closely with JACO and OnLogic’s engineering team to set up a ruggedized, reliable solution that could be easily mounted on both horizontal or vertical surfaces. Fanless and compact, the system was designed with high-quality, nickel-plated steel, so it was durable as well as quiet. Removing the fan also optimized energy-efficiency to ensure maximum uptime. Equipped with Intel’s Cedarview Atom processor, the unit was designed to handle diverse multimedia content. It was RoHS certified and UL94V-0 compliant, and coated with detergent-compatible paints.
“We were pleased and impressed with the final product,” says John Bogigian, JACO’s Purchasing Manager. “And the entire procurement process--from our first discussions to purchase--was seamless and without bumps.”
